what is pluto?

"Automated trading for everyone"

"Portfolio management made easy"

Today's trading and investment platforms with capabilities that are available to the everyday trader are limited to buying and selling with individual decisions that are initiated directly by the trader. Everything is manual, which can lead to brash decisions that may not be backed up by hard evidence.

Large investment companies, such as Bridgewater Associates, have been building their databases of trading data for decades, giving them the upper hand on observing trends and making better predictions based on historical data. What's more, they have not only been collecting this data, but have been building rules that execute automatically based on both live and historical data.

Until now, something similar to this setup would be an enormous undertaking for individual traders, especially those just entering the game. Although it has been increasingly more common for day traders to learn the code necessary to take all of this data into account and create algorithms to buy and sell, the barrier to entry is still incredibly high considering the multidisciplinary nature of this endeavor.

Above is an example from the stock charts provided on Google, which allow for basic visual analysis of a particular asset.

In light of this, Pluto aims to provide regular people access to algorithmic trading that use historical and live data to build and test rulesets.

my role

As a startup of less than 10 people, I was the first in-house designer Pluto took on.

Within 3 days of joining the company, I hit the ground running to learn as much as I could about the stock market, the product, and its users. The team followed the general practice of failing fast, making for an incredibly fast paced environment. This didn't leave as much room for a concrete adherence to design processes, but I did my best to follow them where I could.

Problem definitions and goals, sketching, wireframing, creating user flows, quick prototyping, user observation and research metrics, and information architectures were all used in my work.

I was on the product team, where I worked closely with the CEO and COO who are both developers in their own right and who built most of the initial product, and the first Senior Developer who is helping expand the output of the team. As a part of the product team, I had a direct impact on many parts of the platform and have helped shape the current product to where it is, as well as helped plan ahead for some of the future capabilities to come. I also worked with the marketing team to create both video assets and marketing templates.
